April Haiku #16

Shadow draws a line
Time slides up the stucco wall
Day turns to twilight

April Haiku #15

Outside, kids' voices
Sift through the kitchen shutters
Inside, I listen

April Haiku #14

A first-quarter moon
The blind dog snuffles the grass
My shadow watches

April Haiku #13

Clouds like bulging dough
Expand, fill the empty sky
I reach for a bite

April Haiku #12

Next door, dishes clack
I wheel the trash to the curb
Listening to the night

April Haiku #11

Across the high fence
My neighbor's lemon tree grows
A bough on my side

April Haiku #10

Gray clouds press the sky
Evening air shudders and creaks
A patter of rain

April Haiku #9

Dawn pulls a blanket
of fog from the sleeping Earth
Happy New Morning!

April Haiku #8

Sunset, fists of fog
Scrabble to the mountain crest,
Slide to the valley

April Haiku #7

Curled up on a thread
A spider--I move it out--
scuttles to the grass

April Haiku #6

Moon like a feather
Hovers over the mountains
Then floats to the sky

April Haiku #5

A thousand days gone
Since I last saw you, my friend
A hundred gray hairs

April Haiku #4

Sequoia forest
Tick, tick breaks the solitude
Needles in my hair

Friday, April 17, 2015

April Haiku #3

By a broken fence
Tangled ragweed, trash tucked in
A butterfly flits

April Haiku #2

Dawn, my garden sleeps
The little dog trots outside
Lilacs shake their heads

April Haiku #1

Although it's a late start, I'm celebrating National Poetry Month by writing a haiku a day for the rest of April. I'll follow the 5-7-5 syllable pattern, but I won't pretend to understand the aesthetic nuances of this poetic form.

Ahem...

A strand of my hair
floats on the swollen river
Something left behind
